The Gorilla Theatre will offer a series of acting workshops with Giles Davies, starting Saturday January 15.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Giles Davies is an accomplished actor whom Gorilla Theatre audiences will recognize from The Lark and Elizabeth and Edward. Giles completed his M.F.A. at The Ohio State University. He has taught workshops, residencies and classes for all ages and experience levels. He was an Ohio Arts Council resident teaching artist for 7 years, and adjunct professor at The University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music and Drama for 6 years. He specializes in teaching Shakespeare, movement, and acting. He has had the privilege of studying with Marcel Marceau, The SITI Co., Richard Schechner, The Wooster Group, Kevin Kling, and Danny Hoch, among others. He initiated a High School age actor training program at The Cincinnati Shakespeare Co., where he worked full time as an ensemble member for 9 years (performing in over 45 productions on their stage).
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Actors may elect to take one or more three-hour workshops. Each three-hour class will be divided into two parts; Movement for the Actor, and Shakespeare's Text.
The first 90 minutes of each class will focus on movement for the actor. The focus will be on stretching, strengthening, and an introduction to the physical “scales” of Etienne Decroux. These “scales” provide a working vocabulary to unlock the body's potential in physical gesture, giving the actor a conscious blueprint for the creation of character and gesture. The class participant should come in comfortable form fitting clothing.
The second 90 minutes of the class time will be devoted to analyzing, comprehending, and delivering the complex text of Shakespeare. Techniques for unlocking the poetics, assisting audience comprehension, gleaning the playwright's intention, and reproducing with the illusion of true communication will be the main thrust of the work. Text will be provided, and perhaps in later sessions, participants could bring in their favorite passages to work on.
